Photosystem II (PSII) is a membrane protein complex which functions to catalyze light-induced water oxidation in oxygenic photosynthesis. Through the water-splitting reaction of PSII, light energy is converted into biologically useful chemical energy, and molecular oxygen is formed which transformed the atmosphere into an aerobic one and sustained aerobic life on the Earth.
Photosystem II is the first link in the chain of photosynthesis. It captures photons and uses the energy to extract electrons from water molecules. These electrons are used in several ways. First, when the electrons are removed, the water molecule is broken into oxygen gas, which bubbles away, and hydrogen ions, which are used to power ATP
On one hand, production of singlet oxygen ((1)O(2)) by PSII has promoted models in which this r … 2021-04-11 2019-03-19 2016-09-16 Figure emphasizes the structures of the three hetero-oligomeric complexes in the chain: (a) the hetero-dimeric photosystem II complex (Figure 3); molecular weight of cyanobacterial PSII complex≈350 kDa, containing 20 subunits, 35 chlorophyll molecules, 11 carotenoids, 14 lipids, 2 hemes, 1 non-heme iron, and the water-splitting Mn 4 CaO 5-cluster; (b) homo-trimeric photosystem I reaction Both photosystem (PS I and PS II) are affected by light with wavelengths shorter than 680nm (nanometer), while photosystem I is affected by light with wavelengths longer than 680nm. Photosystem I includes the following pigments: Chlorophyll b, Chlorophyll -a 670, Chlorophyll -a 680, Chlorophyll -a 695, Chlorophyll -a 700 or P700, Carotenoids. Photosystem II 2 Last updated; Save as PDF Page ID 486; References; Photosystem is the form of pigments on the thylakoid membrane1. It collects energy over the wavelengths and concentrates it to one molecule which uses the energy to pass one of its electrons on to a series of enzymes1. At the heart of a photosystem lies the reaction center, which is an enzyme that uses light to reduce molecules (provide with electrons).

It is located in the thylakoid membrane of plants, algae, and cyanobacteria. Within the photosystem, enzymes capture photons of light to energize electrons that are then transferred through a variety of coenzymes and cofactors to reduce plastoquinone to plastoquinol. The energized electrons are replaced by oxidizing water to form hydrogen ions and molecular oxygen.

Photoinhibition of Photosystem II (PSII) is the light-induced loss of PSII electron-transfer activity. Although photoinhibition has been studied for a long time, there is no consensus about its mechanism. On one hand, production of singlet oxygen ((1)O(2)) by PSII has promoted models in which this r …
We have used these to predict sites for modification of the catalytic sites by site-directed mutagenesis. Photosystem II captures sunlight and powers the unique photo-induced oxidation of water to atmospheric oxygen.
It oxidizes two molecules of water into one molecule of molecular oxygen.
